Pennies from Heaven

Pennies from Heaven, a BBC drama serial created by Dennis Potter in 1978, cleverly blends stark reality with elements of dark fantasy. The title references a classic song by Johnny Burke and Arthur Johnston. This groundbreaking work features characters who spontaneously mime to beloved 1930s tunes, marking one of Potter's earliest explorations of this unique narrative style. With its innovative approach and poignant storytelling, the series captures the longing and despair of its characters while infusing the drama with a whimsical musicality that resonates with audiences.
