The show explores her interactions with eccentric friends and family amid everyday challenges. Notably, it made history when Ellen's character came out as gay in the 1997 "Puppy Episode," stirring significant media attention and controversy, which led ABC to add a parental advisory. The series is also remembered for its unique opening credits in each episode, paired with the theme song "So Called Friend" by the band Texas.
