In the heart of Appalachia, a fierce battle is unfolding over a prized resource: ginseng. As international demand surges, enterprising dealers scramble to capitalize on this lucrative market, with prices reaching approximately $1,000 per pound. The rush to harvest this so-called mountain gold has diggers in a frenzy, fueled by the belief that its twisted roots possess extraordinary healing properties. The struggle for control over ginseng not only impacts local livelihoods but also determines who holds power over the region’s rich natural landscape.
