Three young independent filmmakers embark on their debut feature, delving into the legacy of the Chernobyl disaster and the invisible menace of the radioactive cloud that has lingered since 1986. Set against the backdrop of Romania's post-communist landscape, where many of the creative team were born after the 1989 Revolution, The Lost Year 1986 blends humor with heartfelt storytelling. The narrative follows a family's struggles in a rural village, shining a light on the enduring effects of the nuclear accident while capturing a unique perspective on history and resilience.
