Eugene, a budding writer from Brooklyn, finds himself drafted into the Army near the end of World War II. Sent to Camp Shelby in Mississippi for basic training, he faces tough conditions, poor meals, and rampant antisemitism. To cope, Eugene leans on his humor and his diary, though they offer little solace against the harsh realities of military life, particularly the challenges posed by a volatile drill sergeant. As tensions rise, Eugene navigates the complexities of camaraderie and conflict, shaping his experiences into a poignant reflection on growth and resilience.
