In "Mephisto," a German theater actor experiences an unforeseen rise to fame through his role in a Faust-inspired play as the Nazis ascend to power in pre-WWII Germany. Amidst the chaos and persecution faced by his friends and colleagues, his onstage persona begins to eclipse his real identity. As he navigates the treacherous landscape of Nazi favoritism, he realizes that his greatest act becomes the façade he must maintain for his patronizers, leading to a profound internal conflict between his art and the grim reality surrounding him.
