Shakespeare's timeless tale of the troubled prince finds a remarkable interpretation under Soviet director Grigori Kozintsev. Set in a haunting Estonian castle that symbolizes Hamlet's mental confinement, the film explores the depths of despair and vengeance. Innokenti Smoktunovsky embodies Hamlet as a thoughtful intellectual surrounded by hedonistic characters. Kozintsev's bold directorial choices, such as having Hamlet deliver the iconic "To be or not to be" soliloquy with his back to the audience, invite viewers to engage deeply with the character's turmoil and the play's existential themes.
