The Trial (2018)

The impeachment of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff in 2016, fueled by a significant corruption scandal involving her vice-president Michel Temer, is explored through the lens of her defense team. Director Maria Augusta Ramos crafts a courtroom drama that unfolds with a theatrical pace, revealing the emotional stakes as various parties present their cases. While tensions mount inside the courtroom, lobbyists and supporters hover outside in the corridors. Outside Brasília’s iconic government structures, protesters echo their demands like a Greek chorus. Throughout this chaos, Rousseff maintains an air of professionalism, remaining distanced from the unfolding drama.
