Set in 1856, Nawab Wajid Ali Shah reigns over Awadh, one of India's final independent kingdoms. With British forces eyeing annexation, General Outram is dispatched to establish control over the affluent territory. As political tension rises, the Nawab immerses himself in indulgence and spirituality, seemingly oblivious to the impending threat. Meanwhile, the court's noblemen, Mir and Mirza, neglect their responsibilities, absorbed in endless chess matches. This tale, adapted from Munshi Premchand's short story, captures a moment in history where leisure and political strife collide, reflecting the complexities of colonial India.
