The siege of Leningrad commenced on September 8, 1941, when German forces cut off the city's last supply route. Although Soviet troops established a narrow land corridor by January 18, 1943, the relentless blockade persisted until January 27, 1944, lasting a harrowing 872 days. This siege is recorded as one of the longest and most devastating in history, marked by staggering casualties. In contemporary discussions, some historians have deemed it a genocide, citing the deliberate starvation and systematic targeting of the civilian population as key factors in its tragic legacy.
