A young mother, struggling with infidelity, faces rejection from her harsh husband, the Attorney General of France. Despite her sincere efforts to reconcile, she is prohibited from seeing her three-year-old son. Fleeing to foreign lands, she seeks solace in Absinthe for years. Fate intervenes when her now-adult son, a rising lawyer, unwittingly finds himself defending her in a court case. Ruth Chatterton delivers a stunning performance as Madame X in this early sound film, capturing the deep emotional turmoil of a woman torn from her child and seeking redemption.
