Orphaned shoeshine boy Spanky finds himself aboard a Mississippi riverboat amid the chaos of the Civil War. He forms a bond with Buckwheat, a young runaway slave, but their troubles escalate after crossing paths with a ruthless gambler, prompting them to flee.
