The struggle to save North Atlantic right whales from extinction clashes with the interests of the lobster industry, highlighting a complex dilemma faced by the National Marine Fisheries Service. With fewer than 400 individuals remaining, these whales rank among the most endangered species globally. The combination of millions of lobster lines and the effects of climate change has led to a dramatic decline in their population. Proposed federal regulations aim to cut lobster lines by 50% in parts of the Gulf of Maine, igniting a political uproar and threatening the livelihoods of local lobstermen while the whales' future remains uncertain.
