Set in a picturesque Belgian village before the war, Wortel, a humble farmer, grapples with the harsh realities of life that shatter his idyllic existence. Based on Felix Timmermans' novel, the story unfolds as Wortel struggles to reconcile the curate's comforting belief in a divine plan with the relentless suffering that befalls his family and friends. The juxtaposition of serene rural life and the tragic events that unfold challenges his faith and understanding of fate, leading to a poignant exploration of hope and despair in the face of adversity.
