Petition offers a gripping exploration of China's troubled justice system, where citizens burdened by grievances must journey to Beijing to seek redress. As they navigate a convoluted process filled with uncertainty, a diverse group of petitioners’ struggles unfold between 1996 and 2008. Shot discreetly from the perspective of these individuals, the documentary captures their resilience and determination, echoing the narratives of literary giants like Zola and Dickens. Instead of focusing on officials or local authorities, the film intimately portrays the human side of a bureaucratic labyrinth, highlighting the quest for justice in a challenging environment.
