Dr. Matthew Clark oversees a state-run facility for children with intellectual disabilities, where Jean Hansen, an ex-music teacher seeking purpose, begins working. While Jean pours her affection into nurturing the children, she grows wary of Dr. Clark's rigid disciplinary techniques. Her compassion deepens as she forms a bond with 12-year-old Reuben Widdicombe, a boy grappling with the pain of rejection from his divorced parents. As Jean navigates her conflicting feelings towards the institution's methods and her connection with Reuben, she discovers the complexities of love and care in a challenging environment.
