Alfie Byrne, a middle-aged bus conductor in 1963 Dublin, leads a seemingly mundane life marked by unfulfilled desires. Closeted and pressured by his sister to meet “the right girl,” he finds solace in his love for Oscar Wilde and his dedication to staging amateur theater in a local church hall. As he navigates the complexities of friendship, societal disapproval, and his own identity, Alfie’s journey reflects the tension between personal truth and the conservative values of early 1960s Ireland, revealing a poignant tale of self-discovery and resilience.
