A light-skinned African-American family navigates life in a predominantly white New England town, successfully concealing their racial identity. However, their secret is eventually revealed, leading to a backlash from the bigoted residents who push for their removal. As tensions rise, the family grapples with the harsh realities of prejudice and the fragility of acceptance, forcing them to confront their place in a society that values color over character. The story poignantly explores themes of identity, belonging, and the impact of racism in mid-20th century America.
