A devoted mother clings to hope as she awaits the return of her sailor son, who has been absent for years yet remains in touch through heartfelt letters. As she navigates her loneliness, she confides in a close friend and co-worker, sharing both her sorrow and the contents of the correspondence. Over time, this friend becomes enamored with the idea of the absent son, romanticizing his character and their imagined connection, which complicates the dynamics of their friendship and deepens the mother's emotional turmoil.
