Peony escapes an arranged marriage in China, eager for independence and adventure. She signs on as a "flower girl" in America, where her life intertwines with Tom, a Chinese-American cook whose father labors on the Transcontinental Railroad. Their budding romance faces peril from a Hong Kong Triad boss aiming to expand his influence in the U.S. Set against the backdrop of 1871's tragic mass lynching in Los Angeles' Chinatown, this poignant narrative explores themes of love, cultural clash, and the struggles of the first wave of Chinese immigrants seeking a new life.
