Four Moods showcases the talents of prominent Chinese-language directors, crafted to help alleviate Li Han-hsiang’s financial woes in the late '60s. King Hu’s gripping segment, Anger, adapts the renowned Peking opera San Cha Kou, immersing viewers in a stylishly shot confrontation among political schemers, avengers, and drifters within an inn. Li Han-hsiang’s Happiness draws inspiration from the Strange Tales of Liaozhai, depicting the uplifting story of a benevolent ghost. Meanwhile, Pai Ching-Jui’s Joy and Lee Hsing’s Sadness delve into the poignant connections between mortals and ethereal women, weaving a rich tapestry of emotions.
