In 1902 Beijing, ambitious portrait photographer Liu Jinglun eagerly embraces modern technology when he befriends Englishman Wallace, who introduces him to cinema with a projector and short films. Liu views the burgeoning film industry as a pathway to wealth and securing Ling’s affection. An invitation to showcase their films for the Empress Dowager offers hope, but looming challenges raise questions about the balance between preserving tradition and embracing innovation.
