The Ugly American

Harrison MacWhite, a bright and eloquent scholar, navigates a contentious Senate confirmation to become the U.S. ambassador to Sarkan, a Southeast Asian nation on the brink of civil war. Upon arrival, he struggles to grasp the local complexities, viewing the situation solely through a lens of American versus Communist ideologies. Dismissing the anti-American feelings as mere hostility, he alienates his ally, Deong, and disregards crucial advice about infrastructure development. As MacWhite forces his agenda, the consequences ripple through the nation and his relationships, raising the question of what sacrifices must be made for understanding and progress.
