Bill Douglas’ poignant first installment of his trilogy delves into his challenging childhood in 1940s Scotland. As an eight-year-old navigating life in a struggling mining community, he finds solace in the cinema, a rare escape from the harsh realities of poverty. His passion for film is fueled by the meager funds he earns from returning empty jam jars. Living alongside his half-brother and ailing grandmother, Douglas vividly captures the essence of hardship and the flickers of hope that flicker through the lens of his early experiences.
