Set in Germany during the fall of 1957, Lola, a captivating cabaret singer and former prostitute, revels in her allure but longs for a more fulfilling life filled with wealth, property, and genuine affection. She devises a bold scheme to manipulate a crooked contractor and a principled new building commissioner, aiming to climb the social ladder in a society where desires and morals are up for grabs. Filmed in vibrant, playful hues, Fassbinder’s work serves as a satirical homage to Josef von Sternberg’s classic The Blue Angel, critiquing the excesses of capitalism.
