TESTAMENT serves as a stunning self-representation by James Broughton, a prominent figure in avant-garde cinema and poetry since the 1940s. With a blend of irony, charm, humor, and a mix of joyful self-adoration and lighthearted self-critique, Broughton reflects on his life and artistic journey. The film intersperses scenes from his previous works, showcasing humor, magic, slapstick, melodrama, and romance that define his unique style. Rich personal symbols abound, linked through wordplay, Zen poetry, personal anecdotes, songs, a child's prayer, dreams, and visions. Critics praise it as one of the most significant films in American independent cinema, highlighting its emotional depth and sublime detachment.
