Marta's Suitcase

Marta's Suitcase challenges conventional views on gender violence by presenting a protagonist who defies typical victim stereotypes. Marta has never endured physical abuse prior to her near-fatal encounter and hails from a stable background. Her powerful assertion—“There is no profile for battered women; it can happen to anyone”—highlights her resilience and determination to confront institutional failures. The narrative also delves into the psyche of the perpetrator, offering insights through the work of therapist Harald Burgauner, a leading expert in Austria. This exploration seeks to understand the complexities behind male violence.
