In René Clair’s 1934 French comedy, the tiny, fictional European kingdom of Casinario teeters on the edge of financial ruin. Its desperate government, facing empty coffers, pins its hopes on a wealthy, eccentric Frenchman to rescue them. However, their savior turns out to be more of a handful than anticipated, throwing the palace into delightful chaos. Starring Max Dearly and Marthe Mellot, this satirical farce pokes fun at royalty and economics with Clair's signature wit, as the kingdom’s fate balances precariously on one man’s whims and lavish spending.
