A groundbreaking experiment served as a “prestige advertisement” for Shell Motor Oil, pushing the boundaries of animation in 1936. With Disney's dominance over conventional animation, European filmmakers like Len Lye embraced puppetry, collaborating with avant-garde artists including Humphrey Jennings and John Banting to craft whimsical characters. Lye skillfully navigated the intricate color process, merging three separate images to create a stunning storm sequence. Critics celebrated this achievement as a significant leap forward for color film. Accompanied by Holst's The Planets, the work stands as a testament to innovation in cinematic art.
