John Lawless, a cheerful and extraordinarily fortunate Irish immigrant, finds work as the butler for the eccentric millionaire, Biddle. His daughter, Cordelia Drexel Biddle, grows weary of her father's quirky behavior, particularly since it intimidates any potential suitors. After all, who wouldn’t be scared of a father-in-law who keeps alligators as pets and conducts boxing lessons during Bible study? As John navigates the chaos of this peculiar household, both he and Cordelia confront the challenges of love and family in a world filled with whimsy and oddities.
