Ankrum's prolific career spanned three decades, with a significant focus on the western and science-fiction genres. He appeared in classic westerns like Ride 'Em Cowboy (1942), Vera Cruz alongside legends Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster, and Cattle Queen of Montana featuring Barbara Stanwyck and Ronald Reagan.
