Ito's legal career has been marked by significant milestones. He served as a judge in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, where he presided over numerous cases before the Simpson trial brought him into the national spotlight. His judicious approach during the trial was often scrutinized, especially given the media frenzy surrounding the proceedings.

In his personal life, Ito was married to Margaret York, an officer with the Los Angeles Police Department, from 1981 until her passing in 2021. The dynamics of their relationship became particularly notable during the Simpson trial, as Mark Fuhrman, a police officer and key witness, had previously made derogatory remarks about York. This created a tense situation when the prosecution considered calling York to the stand, which could have jeopardized Ito's position as the presiding judge.

Despite the controversies, Ito's legacy remains tied to the landmark trial that not only shaped his career but also left an indelible mark on the American legal landscape.
