Shunta's early career in the entertainment industry showed promise, but it took a significant turn on April 4, 2009, when he was arrested by the Metropolitan Police for violating the Cannabis Control Act due to possession of a small amount of cannabis in Suginami Ward, Tokyo. His father, Masatoshi, held a press conference the following day to announce Shunta's dismissal from his agency, which Masatoshi presided over, and Shunta's decision to retire from acting. On April 14, he was released after receiving a suspended prosecution, given that he was a first-time offender and expressed remorse for his actions. In October 2011, reports emerged of Shunta's new career path as a golf instructor at a school in Minato, Tokyo. When asked about a potential return to acting, he stated that it was not the right time for him to re-enter the entertainment sphere.
