Víctor Erice Aras, born on 30 June 1940 in Karrantza, Biscay, stands as one of Spain's most revered cinematic voices. Erice's breakthrough came with *The Spirit of the Beehive* (1973), a haunting portrait of rural Spain in 1940, released while Franco still ruled. Through rich symbolism, the film subtly critiqued authoritarian life without resorting to propaganda, and it is now celebrated as a cornerstone of Spanish cinema. A decade later, he delivered *El Sur* (1983), adapted from Adelaida García Morales's story—though producer Elías Querejeta restricted him to filming only two-thirds of the narrative, the result remains a beloved classic.

His third feature, *The Quince Tree Sun* (1992), a documentary meditation on painter Antonio López García, earned the Jury Prize and FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes. After a three-decade hiatus, Erice returned with *Cerrar los ojos* (2023), which premiered at Cannes to enthusiastic acclaim. His contributions have been widely recognized: he served on the 2010 Cannes jury and received a Golden Leopard for lifetime achievement at Locarno in 2014.
