Jia's early works, which form a loose trilogy set in his native Shanxi province, were produced outside the constraints of China's state-run film industry, earning the designation of "underground" films. His breakthrough came in 2004 when he received state approval to direct his fourth feature, The World, markedly increasing his recognition within China. Internationally acclaimed, Jia's films have garnered numerous accolades, including the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for his film Still Life. His achievements have also been recognized through the Leopard of Honour at the Locarno Film Festival in 2010, the Carrosse d'Or lifetime achievement award at Cannes in 2015, and an honorary award at Visions du Réel in 2024.
