Watkins' foray into the adult film industry began with an uncredited screenplay for *Mystique* (1979), directed by Roberta Findlay. In 1980, he stepped into the limelight as a director and writer of adult feature films, adopting the pseudonym Richard Mahler—a tribute to his favorite composers, Richard Wagner and Gustav Mahler. His directorial works, such as *Her Name Was Lisa* (1980), *Midnight Heat* (1983), *Corruption* (1983), and *American Babylon* (1985), are often regarded as cult classics. These films transcended traditional adult content, incorporating complex narratives, elements of avant-garde, horror, and satire, positioning them closer to arthouse cinema than conventional pornography.

Throughout his career, Watkins collaborated with notable adult film stars, including Jamie Gillis and Vanessa del Rio, leaving a lasting impact on the genre. His unique approach and artistic vision continue to resonate with fans of alternative cinema.
