Chen's journey to filmmaking was not straightforward. After a challenging academic path, including a stint at a cram school and military service, he finally gained admission to Tamkang University, where he studied Educational Media and Library Sciences, graduating in 1989. He began his career in the industry as a script supervisor on Tsai Ming-Liang's *Happy Motor Shop* (1989).

In 1994, Chen released his debut feature film, *Tropical Fish*, which garnered both commercial success and critical acclaim, solidifying his reputation in the film industry.
