In 2015, Carr was recognized in Variety's list of Documakers To Watch and was subsequently featured in Forbes' 30 Under 30 list for her significant influence in the media landscape. She is the daughter of the late media columnist for The New York Times, David Michael Carr, and currently resides in New York City.

Carr's work is characterized by a focus on narratives that explore the complexities of the internet and its users. She is adept at uncovering stories that reveal broader societal issues, often illustrating connections without the need to cover every detail within a single documentary. As she stated in 2013, "That's what being a journalist is – it's going out into the world and finding people and things that are more interesting than you are and telling that story. It's not a story until you have somebody to tell that story." Through her unique approach, Carr continues to engage audiences and provoke thought on critical contemporary issues.
