Francis's rise to prominence began in 1958 with her rendition of "Who's Sorry Now?", a classic from 1923, which marked the start of a series of top-10 hits. In 1960, she made history by becoming the first female artist to reach the No. 1 position on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 with "Everybody's Somebody's Fool". Over her career, she achieved three No. 1 hits from a total of 53 entries, making her one of the most successful female singers in America prior to the British Invasion.

In addition to her English-language success, Francis recorded songs in multiple languages such as Italian, French, German, Greek, Yiddish, and Japanese, which contributed to her international acclaim and popularity within various immigrant communities in the United States.

Despite facing personal challenges between 1974 and 1988, including a traumatic assault that impacted her mental and physical health, she made a comeback in 1989 and continued performing until her retirement in 2018. Notably, her 1962 song "Pretty Little Baby" experienced a resurgence in 2025, gaining viral fame on social media just before her passing.
