Brakhage’s films invite audiences to move beyond conventional narratives and engage with visual perception itself. He aspired to evoke a "stream-of-visual consciousness" that transcends verbal interpretation, aiming for a more immediate emotional connection through vibrant colors and minimal sound.

His work is often categorized into distinct phases. Early short films highlighted the interplay of light, while his experimental techniques frequently involved manipulating film stock directly—painting, scratching, and dyeing it, or even incorporating organic materials. A notable instance of this is his acclaimed short *Mothlight* (1963), which featured moth wings affixed to the film. Personal experiences deeply influenced his early works, such as *Wedlock House: An Intercourse* (1959), which portrayed intimacy with his bride, and *Sirius Remembered* (1959), a poignant reflection on loss.

In the 1960s, Brakhage’s innovative style garnered praise for its poetic nature, though the 1970s saw him tackle more unsettling social realities in the "Pittsburgh documents," including the grim *Act of Seeing with One's Own Eyes* (1971). His later work in the 1980s shifted towards pure abstraction, exemplified by *Arabics* (1982), which he described as visual representations of music. Alongside his filmmaking, Brakhage authored books on cinema and contributed to film education as a teacher, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the art world.
