Beginning in 2019, he became one of several employees to publicly share concerns about manufacturing practices with The New York Times, and his story was later featured in the 2022 Netflix documentary *Downfall: The Case Against Boeing*.

While at the South Carolina plant, Barnett reported multiple safety and quality issues to both Boeing and the FAA. His complaints about malfunctioning emergency oxygen systems were corroborated by Boeing's internal investigations, and in 2017, the FAA mandated corrective actions following his reports about non-conforming parts and metal shavings. In response to these concerns, Barnett filed a whistleblower complaint with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) under the FAA's Whistleblower Protection Program, AIR 21. After a four-year investigation in 2021, OSHA ruled in favor of Boeing, prompting Barnett and his attorneys to appeal and amend the complaint, alleging that the company had "undermined his career because he had raised safety concerns"—a claim Boeing denied. At the time of his death, his case remained pending and was later continued under his estate.

In March 2024, after missing his third day of depositions, Barnett was found dead from a gunshot wound. The Charleston County coroner ruled the wound self-inflicted, and police investigations confirmed suicide, attributing it to personal distress linked to his whistleblower case, despite widespread conspiracy theories alleging foul play.
