Her artistic journey began in Germany's vibrant alternative theater and cabaret scene, where she emerged as a prominent producer and performer. Before fully embracing the performing arts, she held various positions, including medical lab assistant and magazine editor. Inspired by the eccentricities of Bavaria's King Ludwig II, she earned the title of the "mother of Munich's sub-culture," largely due to her involvement with the avant-garde theater troupe Opera Curiosa.

Sägebrecht's breakout moment arrived when she caught the attention of director Percy Adlon during her portrayal of a delicate prostitute in the 1977 production of *Adele Spitzeder*. Adlon subsequently cast her in his TV special *Herr Kischott* and later created the lead role in *Sugarbaby* specifically for her—a story of an overweight mortician infatuated with a subway conductor.

Her talent soon crossed the Atlantic, leading to roles in American cinema, including a reimagined part in Paul Mazursky's *Moon over Parador* and a memorable turn as a German housekeeper in Danny DeVito's *The War of the Roses*. Returning to her roots, she captivated audiences with her role in *Martha and I* (1990) and continued to shine in films like *Mona Must Die* (1994) and *Left Luggage* (1998). Sägebrecht's career exemplifies her versatility and enduring impact on both German and international cinema.
