However, he chose to follow his passion for performing arts instead. In the early stages of his career, he appeared as Russ Gehring in the renowned primetime soap opera Peyton Place and took on the character of Lamar Dean in the 1967 Western film Hombre.

Canary also made a significant mark in the theater world, delivering a remarkable performance on Broadway in Tennessee Williams's Clothes for a Summer Hotel alongside Geraldine Page.
