His journey into dance was influenced by his father, Mugur Sundar, a well-known choreographer in South Indian films. Prabhu Deva honed his skills in various dance forms, including Bharatanatyam, under the guidance of Dharmaraj and Udupi Lakshminarayanan, while also exploring Western dance styles.

Prabhu Deva made his film debut as a young boy in the song "Panivizhum Iravu" from the 1986 Tamil classic Mouna Ragam. His first significant role as a choreographer was in the 1989 film Vetri Vizha, starring Kamal Haasan. He gained recognition as an actor in the 1990s and early 2000s, with notable films such as Kadhalan (1994), Minsara Kanavu (1997), and VIP (1997). Despite a brief decline in his box office appeal, he successfully transitioned into directing with the hit Telugu film Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana in 2005.
