Ataman first gained international recognition in the late 1990s with *Semiha Berksoy* (1997), a portrait of Turkey’s pioneering opera singer, and *Lola and Bilidikid* (1999), a feature film that delved into the lives of transgender individuals in Berlin. His breakthrough work, *Kutluğ Ataman’s Semiha Berksoy* (1997), established his signature approach of long-form, confessional interviews. In 2004, he represented Turkey at the Venice Biennale with *Küba*, a sprawling video installation composed of 40 screens documenting residents of a poor Istanbul neighborhood. The piece earned him the prestigious Carnegie Prize in 2004, cementing his reputation in the contemporary art world. Other notable installations include *Testimony* (2005) and *The Complete Works* (2011), which further explore themes of storytelling and identity.

Ataman’s work has been exhibited at major institutions worldwide, including the Tate Modern, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Centre Pompidou. In 2011, he received the Prince Claus Award for his contributions to visual culture, and his films have screened at Cannes, Berlin, and Sundance. Through his empathetic, unflinching lens, Ataman continues to challenge conventional narratives, giving voice to those often unheard.
