The rural yet intellectually vibrant environment of Redding fostered Joe's diverse interests. He played ice hockey from age four until his freshman year of college and enjoyed activities like hiking and swimming. His first job, which he held through college, was with the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), where he acquired skills in carpentry, auto mechanics, and heavy machinery. This hands-on experience enriched his appreciation for responsibility and craftsmanship.

In addition to sports, Joe was involved in his school’s choirs and musicals, landing roles such as Judah in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" and Agwe in "Once on This Island."
